Make it work, Cindy!

Things have been very political lately. As the Democratic National Convention takes place in Denver, it seems everyone and their mother have something to say and an opinion about something and the fashion world is no exception.

The blogosphere has been going bonkers today over a comment Project Runway's Tim Gunn made about the possible first ladies-to-be.

"There is no contest!! I mean, Michelle really epitomizes American style, and she's not afraid to show her shape, she's not afraid to show her sexiness without being the least bit inappropriate," he said. "She's just an alluring woman. And Cindy with her suits and she's all buttoned up, she's just soooo — she just looks like she's duct-taped! There is just something about her, and in a way it's a metaphor about who she is!"

Speaking in the name of chic women everywhere, I have to say we agree with Tim. Looking at Michelle Obama's outfits for the past few months has given us hope that America might finally have a new Jackie Kennedy living in the White House. It might be because of the way she's turned the pantsuit into a structured and high-fashion-looking outfit with the fitted waist and jewel tones. It might be the way she's experimented with trends like the belted sweater and dress or the way she pulled off a high-waisted skirt and a tank top and headband- something so Gossip Girl- and made it look effortless and appropriate. And let's not forget a black-tie event, where she rocked the boho-chic style with a flowy, colorful dress making politics go beyond the LBD. It is for all those reasons we have to say Michelle is indeed a fashionista. We like our politics fashion-forward, thankyouverymuch, and honestly, Cindy, "make it work."

Separated at birth

      Women's Xhilaration® Sharon Peep-Toe Pumps - Black Patent

Mary-Janes are not going anywhere. They became the must-have shoe last winter and they are still a wardrobe do for next season. The peep-toe mary-janes make a good pair for the transition of summer to fall since they’re still sandals but have the patent and chunky heel we'll be seeing a lot of in a few months. Lucky for all savvychic women, this pair can still leave some extra pennies to be invested on plaid shirts, lacy tops and other Fall trends. From left, Cole Haan Corina OT Mary Jane $429 at zappos.com and Sharon Peep Toe Pumps $22.99 at Target.

Chunky Layered Jewelry

Turquoise & Chain NecklaceCity Style Chunky Stones Necklace

Accessorizing. That is one thing every girl will be doing for the Fall because for the season to come, it will be all about the bling. Actually, to be more specific, all about the chunky, layered bling.

John Galliano, Fendi and Dior all had their runways filled with hard to miss necklaces. The trend is becoming rapidly evident in Hollywood as fashionistas such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Blake Lively have been sporting these flashy pieces around their necks and the next step will inevitably be, well, you.

The key for this look is not to go overboard. It is supposed to be attention-grabbing but keep in mind that not all attention is good. Keep the outfit somewhat demure when going for the the large colorful beads and stay away from metallics when going for chains to avoid looking like a Christmas tree or a big piece of foil. It is also important to go low-key on the earrings so both jewelry pieces don't clash and become overwhelming.

Another rule to go by is that you either go big or layer smaller pieces, never both. So when going for a necklace like Spiegel's Turquoise and Chain necklace, wear it by itself, with a neutral-toned or matching colored top and let the accessory be the focus of the outfit. If going for a softer, girlier look à la Chanel, the Merona® Double-Row Faux Pearl Necklace with Chain Center or Merona® Multi-Row Faux-Pearl Necklace can be paired with a suit or neutral blouse, keeping it classy and adding the unexpected to the conservative.

For an Yves Saint Laurent-inspired gold selection, the Stone Layered Necklace is an option as well as the Abstract Multi Strand Necklace but only worn with a very solid outfit to avoid looking straight out of a rap video.

Finally, if you can't commit to one style among all the beautiful shiny necklaces out for Fall, you can get the best of both worlds with a piece like the City Style Chunky Stones Necklace or Conversation Pieces Hematite and Sapphire Tones Necklace which keep the beads smaller and layering more delicate. With these many options, there's no excuse not to accessorize this season.

Transitioning to Fall

It is sad to say it out loud but summer is slowly but surely coming to an end. As the last weeks of warm weather come and we feel compelled to wear our shorts and dresses for the last few times before putting them away for the colder seasons, an item of transition is needed for when that cooler breeze blows.

The cardigan sweater is the perfect choice for that purpose. With buttons in the front, it allows you to have something on your back without having to commit to a full on fall look. Wear it open with sandals or with a summer scarf and flats when the temperatures drop. Another benefit of the cardigan sweater is that it can also jazz up your outfit. Pairing it with a dress and thick belt or with jeans and a thin belt, it gives the look a leaner shape while making the whole emssemble more modern.

You can find a cardigan sweater here.

The Guessing Game

Every savvychic woman has one friend who is a brand snob. That one girl who might say she loves your top but immediately after you mentioned you bought it on sale at the mall and not at shopbop.com spending half your paycheck she changes her mind saying it looks cheap. That one girl who swears that brand clothing makes all the difference and she wouldn't be caught dead in something that doesn't have a high end label. It is with those girls that I like to play a little game called The Guessing Game.

The rules are simple. You lay out a few like items in front of her. Some are expensive brand name pieces and others are cheaper versions. Will she be able to tell which one is the one she would buy or will she like the one she wouldn't be caught with?

I thought the game was appropriate with the new trendy headbands. Headbands were evident in all sizes on runways for next season. Thick ones or thin ones with bows à la Blair Waldorf, they're great for putting back those untrimmed bangs that keep falling in your eyes or just for adding to an outfit, they come in cheap and extra pricey. Since there's not much room for error in gluing a piece of fabric to a plastic band, however, differences are hard to spot.

Take a guess and then check your answers with the prices below.

Leather Leggings for Less

There are few things that feel as good as finding that one piece of clothing you've been obessing about for cheap and that's why I am in an exceptionally good mood today.

The leather leggings that were first brought to attention by Kate Moss' brand Topshop for the '08 Fall/Winter Collection have been the obsession du jour for celebrities and consequently have become an item of desire for all fashionistas. They had been available at American Apparel for a few months for $40 but while these daring bottoms are hot for next season, like gaucho pants with boots this seems like a look that will only make a brief appearance in the fashion in-list.

So to the appreciation of savvychic women everywhere, the faux leather leggings have been added to the latest Charlotte Russe collection for a wallet-friendly-don't-have-to-feel-guilty-about-wearing-these-only-for-a-couple-times $12.

But before you rush to the mall to get your hands on these babies, keep in mind this look is not for everyone. Not only are they skin tight but the fake leather adds even more attention to the legs making this an extremely unforgiving pair for anyone with a curvier figure. They're also a flashy piece and therefore, unlike the celebs, it is important to keep the rest of the outfit more demure. That means leaving the patent boots and leather mini jacket for Rihanna and just taking her inspiration for the white T-shirt or going for Mary Kate Olsen's more casual style pairing it with converse shoes and an oversized bag. For a night look, go for an à la Nikki Hilton outfit, pairing it  with heels and a mid-length trench coat or a longer top with a belt that covers your booty and adds shape at the waist. To play it safe, opt for the less is more when wearing these and remember that there is a fine line between fierce and dominatrix.

So slouchy!

Denim trends seem to have been going though an ADD phase lately. Skinny, high-waisted, wide-leg and trouser-style are all very in right now and one more look is about to become the latest obsession for denim lovers out there. The boyfriend slouchy jeans are exactly what the name suggests. They are loose throughout the leg, hang just below the waist and have a baggy fit, just like men's jeans. Katie Holmes has been photographed in them for weeks in Manhattan, Reese Witherspoon has joined in the trend and even super pulled-together fashionista Victoria Beckham was seen wearing one. The trick is to pair these comfy and relaxed pants with a tight top so the look is not too shaggy. Ballet flats and a nice belt also help to add a feminine touch to the masculine item. For a boho feel, try rolling up the ends and carry an oversized purse. Here's where you can find this latest trend.

* BDG Slouchy Skinny Jean Cuffed - These jeans have the best of both worlds. They're cut in a skinny fit but have a slouchy style to them too. Perfect if you don't want to go all the way into the trend. Shostyle.com $58

* 501 Boyfriend Cut Jeans - This pair has a straight leg throughout and a low-rise waist. Shown above cuffed, the pants can be unrolled too. Levi's $19.98

* Relaxed Tapered 550 Jeans - The classic cut jeans. It has a higher waist, ends at the ankle and has a relaxed fit throughout. Be very careful. While Mrs. Katie Holmes can pull this one off, pairing it with the wrong top or shoes will make you look more soccer mom than stylish. Levi's $19.98

Fashion Emergency Kit

We've all had our OMG moments. From a broken heel at a party to a ketchup stain during your lunch break, sometimes life just seems to want to have a little fun at the expense of us humans and there's nothing we can do about it. Correction: there's nothing we could do about it. That's right, past tense. After many of those moments I have come up with a list of things that should always, ALWAYS be either a) in your purse (hey, they're huge anyway. Might as well fill them up) or b) in your glove compartment.

Here are the essentials for your fashion 911 moments:

* Nail Polish - In two shades, the one you have your nails painted this week and a clear one. If your nails break, you can quickly correct the chip with a few strokes and not look sloppy, which is the impression you'll give out at work going to a meeting with your manicure half-destroyed. The clear polish is for a less obvious purpose. If you notice your tights starting to run, dab a little of the clear polish at the end of it and let dry. The run won't be fixed but will stop expanding. Try Sally Hansen Nail Color Nude $2.24 at CVS Pharmacies.

* Instant Stain Remover- It works. It really does work. You apply it to the stain immediately after it happens and voilá, your shirt is white again. (Why, oh, why do we suddenly get sloppy when wearing white?) Try Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover Stick $2.99 at facevaluesonline.com.

* Sewing Kit - I confess, once I was almost left pantless in the middle of New York City as all four buttons in my shorts decided to suddenly fall off. I made a stop at a Forever 21 and bought a new pair but only after a good five blocks of walking down 5th holding my shorts up. The situation could have been easily fixed if I had had a needle and thread with me, gone into a bathroom and sewed the buttons back on. Try The Complete Sewing Kit $5 at Walgreens.

* Super Glue - Few things come close to the horror that is having one of your heels break in the middle of a party. I've seen girls break the other unbroken one and making their shoes a pair of flats but that was torture to watch and they weren't even mine. So if you feel your heel coming loose, go to the closest bathroom you can find, sit down and superglue the heel back on. If there's any leftover glue on the shoe, peel that off before adding more to it. Wait for it to dry and you're on your way. Try Scotch Super Glue $11.99 at Target.

* A Pair of Black Ballet Flats - This one will not fit in your purse but is definitely worth having in your car for when you try those brand new stilettos that you find out two hours later could double as torture devices. Try American Eagle Cameo Mary Jane $13.99 at Payless.

Happy (belated) Underwear Day!

As I toured the blogroll yesterday I was confused at why so many of them chose the subject of underwear as a topic of discussion. Even the Today Show had a segment on skivvies and while it all could have been a weird coincidence, it wasn't. As it turns out, yesterday was National Underwear Day. Who knew? So now we're following suit and celebrating underwear day...one day late. Don't worry I won't offend your intelligence and tell you where to buy panties. We all go to Victoria's Secret semi-annual sale for that. I did choose some cute and unusual styles you might want to check out.

The Day of the Week boyshorts are colorful and fun. Girly and kind of childish, made out of cotton and (obviously) stamped with designs from Monday to Friday. Great option for those who have no one to impress.

The nude laser-cut is a favorite of mine. Forget about thongs for avoiding marks, this pair will do the trick without giving you a wedgie. It has no stitching so the nylon and spandex fabric sticks to your skin leaving no panty lines.

What's more pin-up girl sexy than a satin bra? The thick straps and padded cup give this pair an old school charm with a lot of support.

Also adding an old fashioned sex appeal are the high-waisted panties. The black lace adds to the vintage look and the spandex on the sides cover up those love-handles you absolutely hate.

From left: Days of the Week Cheekini $3.99 at Urban Outfitters, Women's Laser-Cut Hipster Underwear $6 at Old Navy, Sophie Satin Bra $8.80 at Forever 21 and Silence & Noise Longline Lace High-Waisted Panty $12 at Urban Outfitters

"Elegance is a question of personality, more than one's clothing." This sentence sums up what SavvyChic is all about. Every girl loves shoes, clothes, accessories but not all girls can afford brand names for the latest styles. And that never stopped anyone from looking great. Any woman can look fabulous without spending a lot of money, all it takes is some creativity and a personal sense of style. Being fashionable doesn't require hundreds of dollars worth of designer tags, and the biggest proof of that is that the author of the quote above is none other than Jean-Paul Gaultier.
